# Session Recordings

Session Recording captures video of what happens in all Virtual Environments, so you can audit activity, investigate incidents, and train your team.

{% hint style="info" %}
Session Recording is disabled by default. Contact Replica support to enable it for your organization.
{% endhint %}

## How Session Recording Works

Session Recording is an organization-wide setting. When it is enabled, Replica automatically records sessions in all Virtual Environments. Recording is automatic, and users cannot start, stop, or pause it. When it is disabled, Replica does not record sessions.

* **Start and stop**: Recording starts when a user connects to a Virtual Environment and stops when the user disconnects.
* **Screen video only**: Replica captures screen video. Audio is not recorded.
* **Segments**: Long sessions are split into segments. Each segment is stored as a separate `.mp4` file.
* **Participants**: The recording lists each user who connects to the environment and the time they joined.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Users see no indicator while a session is being recorded. Update your acceptable use and privacy policies to tell users their Virtual Environment sessions will be recorded.
{% endhint %}

## Access to Recordings

Only users with the **Admin** role can view session recordings. Standard users cannot see any recordings, including their own.

## View Session Recordings

To open the recordings list, open **Administration** and click **Recordings** under **Admin Links**.

The **Session Recordings** page lists each recording with the following details:

| Column           | Description                                          |
| ---------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| **Name / ID** | The Virtual Environment name and ID |
| **Started** | The date and time the recording started |
| **Duration** | The total length of the recording |
| **Size** | The total file size of the recording |
| **Participants** | The number of users who connected during the session |
| **Actions** | A play icon that opens the recording |

## Play a Recording

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
**Open the Recording**

On the **Session Recordings** page, click the play icon in the **Actions** column.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Review the Session**

The recording opens in the playback window. Use the video controls to play, pause, seek, or go full screen.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Select a Segment (Optional)**

To jump to a specific segment, click it under **Segments timeline**.

Click **Timeline** to view segments on a timeline, or **List** to view them as a list.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

The playback window shows:

* **Status**: The recording status, such as **Complete**.
* **Started**, **Updated**, **Duration**, and **Size**: Summary details for the full recording.
* **Details**: The base image and Environment ID of the recorded Virtual Environment. Click the copy icon to copy the Environment ID.
* **Participants**: Each user who connected to the session and the time they joined.
* **Segments timeline**: Each segment's file name, start time, duration, size, status, and participants.

## Share a Recording

Click **Copy playback link** to copy a link to the recording.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Copy playback link** copies the link for the segment that is currently playing, not the full recording.
{% endhint %}

## Retention

Retention for session recordings is managed by Replica and may change over time. Contact your Replica representative if you have specific retention requirements.

See [Data Management](/admin-guide/data-management.md) for other platform retention details.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.replicacyber.com/admin-guide/session-recordings.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
